Apiezon AP-101 Hydrocarbon Greases

Apiezon AP101 is a silicone-free, general purpose hydrocarbon grease, designed for a variety of industrial and scientific applications. Apiezon AP101 is an anti-seize vacuum grease, containing PTFE, which confers superior anti-seize properties providing glass and metal surfaces with long-lasting lubrication and protection from fusing and corrosion.

Apiezon AP101 is a general-purpose hydrocarbon grease with the following attributes:

ideally suited for use in low to medium vacuum ranges having a vapour pressure of <10^-5 Torr at 20°C
has anti-seize properties, making it an effective protector and lubricant for metal surfaces prone to seizure or corrosion
insoluble in most solvents, resistant to water, alcohols, ketones, and esters
resists attack from aqueous acid and alkali solutions, alcoholic alkali solutions and corrosive gases
suitable for use over a wide temperature range
does not suffer from contamination problems associated with silicone-based greases such as 'creep' or 'carry over'
easy to clean and remove using hot water and an aqueous glassware detergent or hydrocarbon solvents

Uses for Apiezon AP-101 Hydrocarbon Greases

With its superior anti-seize properties, AP101 is typically used to maintain the smooth operation of stopcocks and taps in scientific and industrial settings. Coupled with easy separation of ground or polished glass joints, AP101 is an excellent general purpose grease for laboratory use.

AP101's anti-seize properties are not limited to laboratory or glassware use as it is equally effective when used on metal equipment which may be subject to seizure or corrosion. Just a small amount of AP101 on fastenings, protects adequatly against exposure to corrosive environments.

Being hydrocarbon based, Apiezon AP101 does not suffer from the problems of 'creep' or 'carry over' which is traditionally associated with silicone greases. It reduces sample contamination and consequently the risk of interference in analytical techniques such as infra-red and mass spectrometry. Additionally, AP101 can be used with confidence in paint spraying and metal deposition processes.

Under vacuum

Apiezon AP101 exhibits good vacuum properties in the low to medium vacuum range. AP101 can be used under vacuum conditions down to 10^-7 torr at the lowest end of its optimum working temperature range. Wide temperature range

AP101 is an excellent general-purpose grease for sealing joints and can be used over a very wide range of temperatures, possessing its optimum consistency over the -15 to +150°C temperature range, but is useable down to -40°C and, for limited periods, up to +180°C.

Easily removed

Apiezon AP101 is easily removed by wiping with a soft, clean lint free cloth. Any residues of grease can be washed away with warm soapy water or by using any aromatic hydrocarbon solvent (toluene, xylene). For a more environmentally friendly solvent, we recommend limonene.

Apiezon greases are not soluble in alcohols (ethanol, IPA) or ketones (acetone, MEK) so these cannot be used for cleaning.

'Gettering' action

AP101 is manufactured from a unique feedstock containing a high proportion of branched and unsaturated hydrocarbons. These complex structures give AP101 a very high molecular weight and consequently strong powers of absorption, particularly for other hydrocarbon molecules.

Strong absorption properties ensure that Apiezon AP101 has a powerful 'gettering' action (the power to absorb greasy or chemical impurities on metal and glass surfaces – important in the electronics industry where scrupulous cleanliness is required). AP101 has no contaminating effect on electrical equipment and is easily removed by hydrocarbon solvents, taking with it many trace impurities which are not removed by solvents alone.

Shelf life

The shelf life of AP101 is ten years from date of manufacture, providing the product is in the original unopened packaging and has been stored at ambient (10 to 30°C) temperature.

Apiezon AP100 is compatible with a wide range of O-ring materials including:

Silicone
Nitrile (>30% nitrile content)
Nylon
Polyurethane
Polyethylene
Polypropylene

Due to its hydrocarbon base, Apiezon AP100 is not compatible with:

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene M-class rubber)
EPR (ethylene propylene rubber)
Butyl rubber
PVC seals
